Soul Train Postcards
Typography Class
This project begun as a challenge to create a set of postcards based on an event or location using only typography. I decided to incorporate the original and legendary Soul Train television show -- or more so a dance showcase. I remember seeing old clips from my grandparents on our VHS as they would tell me stories of watching new episodes being released.
Therefore, I wanted to make my own postcard set, one that I could see in my grandparents home or even at the O'Hare Airport as a vintage-esque keepstake between busy flights and old memories
Sketches & Brainstorming
I always start on paper, so I started off sketches out what letters and numbers I would use -- including the Spanish alphabet. These sketches became the blueprint as I moved them to Illustrator. I also included small messages and words within each composition -- like a secret message!

Further Research
Not only did I take inspiration from old Soul Train episodes but also from my Chicago grandparents' love for stepping -- a Black American style of dance that is full of funk and style. I wanted to show that through each figure's pose and even in the
flow of the soul train!
Full Design Considerations
Typically seen as the boring side of a postcard and not required of the assignment, I decided to design a backside of the postcard. I decided to keep the back design minimal but intentional.
Lastly, as a love for the history, I added my own slogan reminiscent of the host Don Cornelius, "We wish you love, peace, and soul!". Instead, as a designer, this work was "Designed with love for the culture".
